While the Cobordism Hypothesis provides a translation between topological and categorical structures, the subject of fusion categories arising from representations of finite groups has shown the need for a robust theory of duality in monoidal 2-categories. This book intertwines 3-dimensional category theory with enriched and symmetric monoidal 2-categories to present a comprehensive foundation for duals in dimension two. This framework is presented using wire diagrams, a typographical tool that combines the geometric appeal of ordinary string diagrams with the clarity of standard commutative diagrams in category theory. Chapters on enriched 2-categories, closed 2-categories, and compact closed 2-categories build the theory from the ground up and in full detail. Shorter appendices on technical topics from higher category theory such as icons, strictification theorems, and computads provide readers with concise explanations of key results, as well as references for researchers interested in more depth. The book concludes with a chapter of examples from algebra and topology, including a detailed construction for the example of cobordisms.

Maybe for the first time in the existing literature, we investigate here the almost periodic type solutions to the abstract Volterra difference equations depending on several variables. We also investigate the generalized almost periodic type sequences and their applications in a rather detailed manner as well as many new important spaces of (metrically) generalized almost periodic type spaces of sequences and functions. We essenitally apply some results from the theory of C-regularized solution operator families to the abstract Volterra integro-differential-difference equations, contributing also to the theory of fractional calculus and fractional differential equations.

The theory of abstract Volterra integro-differential equations and the theory of abstract Volterra difference equations are very attractive fields of research of many authors. The almost periodic features and the asymptotically almost periodic features of solutions to the abstract Volterra differential-difference equations in Banach spaces have been sought in many research articles published by now.

The main aim of this monograph is to continue the work collected in my monographs published with W. de Gruyter recently by providing several new results about the existence and uniqueness of almost periodic type solutions to the abstract Volterra integro-differential-difference equations which could be solvable or unsolvable with respect to the highest derivative (order). We would like to particularly emphasize that this is probably the first research monograph devoted to the study of almost periodic type solutions to the abstract Volterra difference equations depending on several variables. We also consider here many new important spaces of (metrically) generalized almost periodic type spaces of sequences and functions, and their almost automorphic analogues. It is also worth noting that this is probably the first research monograph which concerns the generalized almost periodic type sequences and their applications in a rather detailed manner; for the first time in the existing literature, we also present here some applications of results from the theory of $C$-regularized solution operator families to the abstract Volterra difference equations.

Fractional calculus and discrete fractional calculus are rapidly growing fields of theoretical and applied mathematics, which are incredibly important in modeling of various real phenomena appearing in different fields like aerodynamics, rheology, interval-valued systems, chaotic systems with short memory and image encryption and discrete-time recurrent neural networks. Many important research results regarding the abstract fractional differential equations and the abstract fractional difference equations in Banach spaces have recently been obtained by a great number of authors from the whole world. In this monograph, we also contribute to the theories of (discrete) fractional calculus, fractional differential-difference equations and multi-dimensional Laplace transform.

Although the monograph is far from being complete, we have decided to quote almost eight hundred and fifty research articles which could be of some importance to the interested readers for further developments of the theory established here.

The book places emphasis on both the mathematical significance and the strong physical background of wave equations. It presents the theory of wave equations in a unique way, different from the traditional descriptions provided by previous literature. The book is primarily focused on mathematical ideas and thoughts about wave equations. Starting from the modern theory of harmonic analysis, the book develops a few new tools in this field that are being used for better understanding the theory of mathematical physics underlying the well-posedness and scattering theory of wave and Klein-Gordon equations. Additionally, a significant part of this book discusses theories and methods, such as invariant and conservation laws, inward/outward energy methods, etc., that have never been covered by similar books in this field. Finally, the book briefly introduces recent developments in mathematical fields. It is specially designed for experts in mathematics and physics who deal with numerous applications of nonlinear waves in physics, engineering, biology, and other fields.

This monograph is a testament to the potency of the method of singular integrals of layer potential type in solving boundary value problems for weakly elliptic systems in the setting of Muckenhoupt-weighted Morrey spaces and their pre-duals.

A functional analytic framework for Muckenhoupt-weighted Morrey spaces in the rough setting of Ahlfors regular sets is built from the ground up and subsequently supports a Calderón-Zygmund theory on this brand of Morrey space in the optimal geometric environment of uniformly rectifiable sets. A thorough duality theory for such Morrey spaces is also developed and ushers in a never-before-seen Calderón-Zygmund theory for Muckenhoupt-weighted Block spaces. Both weighted Morrey and Block spaces are also considered through the lens of (generalized) Banach function spaces, and ultimately, a variety of boundary value problems are formulated and solved with boundary data arbitrarily prescribed from either scale of space.

The fairly self-contained nature of this monograph ensures that graduate students, researchers, and professionals in a variety of fields, e.g., function space theory, harmonic analysis, and PDE, will find this monograph a welcome and valuable addition to the mathematical literature.

This book provides a self-contained account of continuous-parameter time series, starting with second-order models. Integration with respect to orthogonal increment processes, spectral theory and linear prediction are treated in detail. Lévy-driven models are incorporated, extending coverage to allow for infinite variance, a variety of marginal distributions and sample paths having jumps. The necessary theory of Lévy processes and integration of deterministic functions with respect to these processes is developed at length. Special emphasis is given to the analysis of continuous-time ARMA processes.

Polynomials are useful mathematical tools. They are simply defined and can be calculated quickly on computer systems. They can be differentiated and integrated easily and can be pieced together to form spline curves. After Weierstrass approximation Theorem, polynomial sequences have acquired considerable importance not only in the various
branches of Mathematics, but also in Physics, Chemistry and Engineering disciplines. There is a wide literature on specific polynomial sequences. But there is no literature that attempts a systematic exposition of the main basic methods for the study of a generic polynomial sequence and, at the same time, gives an overview of the main polynomial classes and related applications, at least in numerical analysis. In this book, through an elementary matrix calculus-based approach, an attempt is made to fill this gap by exposing dated and very recent results, both theoretical and applied.

Maximally subelliptic partial differential equations (PDEs) are a far-reaching generalization of elliptic PDEs. Elliptic PDEs hold a special place: sharp results are known for general linear and even fully nonlinear elliptic PDEs. Over the past half-century, important results for elliptic PDEs have been generalized to maximally subelliptic PDEs. This text presents this theory and generalizes the sharp, interior regularity theory for general linear and fully nonlinear elliptic PDEs to the maximally subelliptic setting.

The study of minimal surfaces is an important subject in differential geometry, and Nevanlinna theory is an important subject in complex analysis and complex geometry. This book discusses the interaction between these two subjects. In particular, it describes the study of the value distribution properties of the Gauss map of minimal surfaces through Nevanlinna theory, a project initiated by the prominent differential geometers Shiing-Shen Chern and Robert Osserman.

This authoritative text studies pseudodifferential and Fourier integral operators in the framework of time-frequency analysis, providing an elementary approach, along with applications to almost diagonalization of such operators and to the sparsity of their Gabor representations. Moreover, Gabor frames and modulation spaces are employed to study dispersive equations such as the Schrödinger, wave, and heat equations and related Strichartz problems.

The first part of the book is addressed to non-experts, presenting the basics of time-frequency analysis: short time Fourier transform, Wigner distribution and other representations, function spaces and frames theory, and it can be read independently as a short text-book on this topic from graduate and under-graduate students, or scholars in other disciplines.

The core of this monograph is the development of tools to derive well-posedness results in very general geometric settings for elliptic differential operators. A new generation of Calderón-Zygmund theory is developed for variable coefficient singular integral operators, which turns out to be particularly versatile in dealing with boundary value problems for the Hodge-Laplacian on uniformly rectifiable subdomains of Riemannian manifolds via boundary layer methods. In addition to absolute and relative boundary conditions for differential forms, this monograph treats the Hodge-Laplacian equipped with classical Dirichlet, Neumann, Transmission, Poincaré, and Robin boundary conditions in regular Semmes-Kenig-Toro domains.
The 1-st edition of the “Hodge-Laplacian”, De Gruyter Studies in Mathematics,
Volume 64, 2016, is a trailblazer of its kind, having been written at a time when new results in Geometric Measure Theory have just emerged, or were still being developed. In particular, this monograph is heavily reliant on the bibliographical items. The latter was at the time an unpublished manuscript which eventually developed into the five-volume series “Geometric Harmonic Analysis” published by Springer 2022-2023. The progress registered on this occasion greatly impacts the contents of the “Hodge-Laplacian” and warrants revisiting this monograph in order to significantly sharpen and expand on previous results. This also allows us to provide specific bibliographical references to external work invoked in the new edition.
Lying at the intersection of partial differential equations, harmonic analysis, and differential geometry, this text is suitable for a wide range of PhD students, researchers, and professionals.

This book provides a systematic, rigorous and self-contained treatment of positive dynamical systems. A dynamical system is positive when all relevant variables of a system are nonnegative in a natural way. This is in biology, demography or economics, where the levels of populations or prices of goods are positive. The principle also finds application in electrical engineering, physics and computer sciences.

"The author has greatly expanded the field of positive systems in surprising ways." - Prof. Dr. David G. Luenberger, Stanford University(USA)

This research monograph gives a detailed account of a theory which is mainly concerned with certain classes of degenerate differential operators, Markov semigroups and approximation processes. These mathematical objects are generated by arbitrary Markov operators acting on spaces of continuous functions defined on compact convex sets; the study of the interrelations between them constitutes one of the distinguishing features of the book.

Among other things, this theory provides useful tools for studying large classes of initial-boundary value evolution problems, the main aim being to obtain a constructive approximation to the associated positive C0-semigroups by means of iterates of suitable positive approximating operators. As a consequence, a qualitative analysis of the solutions to the evolution problems can be efficiently developed.

The book is mainly addressed to research mathematicians interested in modern approximation theory by positive linear operators and/or in the theory of positive C0-semigroups of operators and evolution equations. It could also serve as a textbook for a graduate level course.

The monograph gives a detailed exposition of the theory of general elliptic operators (scalar and matrix) and elliptic boundary value problems in Hilbert scales of Hörmander function spaces. This theory was constructed by the authors in a number of papers published in 2005–2009. It is distinguished by a systematic use of the method of interpolation with a functional parameter of abstract Hilbert spaces and Sobolev inner product spaces. This method, the theory and their applications are expounded for the first time in the monographic literature.

The monograph is written in detail and in a reader-friendly style. The complete proofs of theorems are given. This monograph is intended for a wide range of mathematicians whose research interests concern with mathematical analysis and differential equations.

There is no recent elementary introduction to the theory of discrete dynamical systems that stresses the topological background of the topic. This book fills this gap: it deals with this theory as 'applied general topology'. We treat all important concepts needed to understand recent literature. The book is addressed primarily to graduate students. The prerequisites for understanding this book are modest: a certain mathematical maturity and course in General Topology are sufficient.

This monograph examines magnetization dynamics at elevated temperatures which can be described by the stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation (SLLG). The first part of the book studies the role of noise in finite ensembles of nanomagnetic particles: we show geometric ergodicity of a unique invariant measure of Gibbs type and study related properties of approximations of the SLLG, including time discretization and Ginzburg-Landau type penalization. In the second part we propose an implementable space-time discretization using random walks to construct a weak martingale solution of the corresponding stochastic partial differential equation which describes the magnetization process of infinite spin ensembles. The last part of the book is concerned with a macroscopic deterministic equation which describes temperature effects on macro-spins, i.e. expectations of the solutions to the SLLG. Furthermore, comparative computational studies with the stochastic model are included.

We use constructive tools such as e.g. finite element methods to derive the theoretical results, which are then used for computational studies. The numerical experiments motivate an interesting interplay between inherent geometric and stochastic effects of the SLLG which still lack a rigorous analytical understanding: the role of space-time white noise, possible finite time blow-up behavior of solutions, long-time asymptotics, and effective dynamics.

The book gives a systematical presentation of stochastic approximation methods for discrete time Markov price processes. Advanced methods combining backward recurrence algorithms for computing of option rewards and general results on convergence of stochastic space skeleton and tree approximations for option rewards are applied to a variety of models of multivariate modulated Markov price processes. The principal novelty of presented results is based on consideration of multivariate modulated Markov price processes and general pay-off functions, which can depend not only on price but also an additional stochastic modulating index component, and use of minimal conditions of smoothness for transition probabilities and pay-off functions, compactness conditions for log-price processes and rate of growth conditions for pay-off functions. The volume presents results on structural studies of optimal stopping domains, Monte Carlo based approximation reward algorithms, and convergence of American-type options for autoregressive and continuous time models, as well as results of the corresponding experimental studies.

This monograph is a concise introduction to the stochastic calculus of variations (also known as Malliavin calculus) for processes with jumps. It is written for researchers and graduate students who are interested in Malliavin calculus for jump processes. In this book "processes with jumps" includes both pure jump processes and jump-diffusions. The author provides many results on this topic in a self-contained way; this also applies to stochastic differential equations (SDEs) "with jumps".
The book also contains some applications of the stochastic calculus for processes with jumps to the control theory and mathematical finance. Namely, asymptotic expansions functionals related with financial assets of jump-diffusion are provided based on the theory of asymptotic expansion on the Wiener–Poisson space. Solving the Hamilton–Jacobi–Bellman (HJB) equation of integro-differential type is related with solving the classical Merton problem and the Ramsey theory.
The field of jump processes is nowadays quite wide-ranging, from the Lévy processes to SDEs with jumps. Recent developments in stochastic analysis have enabled us to express various results in a compact form. Up to now, these topics were rarely discussed in a monograph.

Krichever and Novikov introduced certain classes of infinite dimensional Lie algebras to extend the Virasoro algebra and its related algebras to Riemann surfaces of higher genus. The author of this book generalized and extended them to a more general setting needed by the applications. Examples of applications are Conformal Field Theory, Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten models, moduli space problems, integrable systems, Lax operator algebras, and deformation theory of Lie algebra. Furthermore they constitute an important class of infinite dimensional Lie algebras which due to their geometric origin are still manageable.

This book gives an introduction for the newcomer to this exciting field of ongoing research in mathematics and will be a valuable source of reference for the experienced researcher. Beside the basic constructions and results also applications are presented.

In a certain sense characteristic functions and correlation functions are the same, the common underlying concept is positive definiteness. Many results in probability theory, mathematical statistics and stochastic processes can be derived by using these functions. While there are books on characteristic functions of one variable, books devoting some sections to the multivariate case, and books treating the general case of locally compact groups, interestingly there is no book devoted entirely to the multidimensional case which is extremely important for applications. This book is intended to fill this gap at least partially. It makes the basic concepts and results on multivariate characteristic and correlation functions easily accessible to both students and researchers in a comprehensive manner.

The first chapter presents basic results and should be read carefully since it is essential for the understanding of the subsequent chapters. The second chapter is devoted to correlation functions, their applications to stationary processes and some connections to harmonic analysis. In Chapter 3 we deal with several special properties, Chapter 4 is devoted to the extension problem while Chapter 5 contains a few applications. A relatively large appendix comprises topics like infinite products, functional equations, special functions or compact operators.

Embeddings of discrete metric spaces into Banach spaces recently became an important tool in computer science and topology. The purpose of the book is to present some of the most important techniques and results, mostly on bilipschitz and coarse embeddings.

The topics include: (1) Embeddability of locally finite metric spaces into Banach spaces is finitely determined; (2) Constructions of embeddings; (3) Distortion in terms of Poincaré inequalities; (4) Constructions of families of expanders and of families of graphs with unbounded girth and lower bounds on average degrees; (5) Banach spaces which do not admit coarse embeddings of expanders; (6) Structure of metric spaces which are not coarsely embeddable into a Hilbert space; (7) Applications of Markov chains to embeddability problems; (8) Metric characterizations of properties of Banach spaces; (9) Lipschitz free spaces. Substantial part of the book is devoted to a detailed presentation of relevant results of Banach space theory and graph theory. The final chapter contains a list of open problems. Extensive bibliography is also included. Each chapter, except the open problems chapter, contains exercises and a notes and remarks section containing references, discussion of related results, and suggestions for further reading.

The book will help readers to enter and to work in a very rapidly developing area having many important connections with different parts of mathematics and computer science.

This book deals with analytic treatments of Markov processes. Symmetric Dirichlet forms and their associated Markov processes are important and powerful tools in the theory of Markov processes and their applications. The theory is well studied and used in various fields. In this monograph, we intend to generalize the theory to non-symmetric and time dependent semi-Dirichlet forms. By this generalization, we can cover the wide class of Markov processes and analytic theory which do not possess the dual Markov processes. In particular, under the semi-Dirichlet form setting, the stochastic calculus is not well established yet. In this monograph, we intend to give an introduction to such calculus. Furthermore, basic examples different from the symmetric cases are given. The text is written for graduate students, but also researchers.

This book is based on the method of operator identities and related theory of S-nodes, both developed by Lev Sakhnovich. The notion of the transfer matrix function generated by the S-node plays an essential role.

The authors present fundamental solutions of various important systems of differential equations using the transfer matrix function, that is, either directly in the form of the transfer matrix function or via the representation in this form of the corresponding Darboux matrix, when Bäcklund–Darboux transformations and explicit solutions are considered. The transfer matrix function representation of the fundamental solution yields solution of an inverse problem, namely, the problem to recover system from its Weyl function. Weyl theories of selfadjoint and skew-selfadjoint Dirac systems, related canonical systems, discrete Dirac systems, system auxiliary to the N-wave equation and a system rationally depending on the spectral parameter are obtained in this way.

The results on direct and inverse problems are applied in turn to the study of the initial-boundary value problems for integrable (nonlinear) wave equations via inverse spectral transformation method. Evolution of the Weyl function and solution of the initial-boundary value problem in a semi-strip are derived for many important nonlinear equations. Some uniqueness and global existence results are also proved in detail using evolution formulas.

The reading of the book requires only some basic knowledge of linear algebra, calculus and operator theory from the standard university courses.

This book is the second edition of the first complete study and monograph dedicated to singular traces. The first volume offers, due to the contributions of Albrecht Pietsch and Nigel Kalton, a complete theory of traces and their spectral properties on ideals of compact operators, updated in this second edition on the fundamental new approach for compact operators, the Pietsch correspondence. For mathematical physicists and other users of Connes’ noncommutative geometry the text offers a complete reference to Dixmier traces and associated formulas involving residues of spectral zeta functions and asymptotics of partition functions. An operator based theory of pseudodifferential operators is used to detail the deep association between the noncommutative residue in differential geometry and singular traces. The second volume introduces noncommutative integration theory on semifinite von Neumann algebras and the theory of singular traces for symmetric operator spaces. Deeper aspects of the association between measurability, poles and residues of spectral zeta functions, and asymptotics of heat traces are studied. Applications in Connes’ noncommutative geometry that are detailed include integration of quantum differentials, measures on fractals, and Connes’ character formula concerning the Hochschild class of the Chern character.

This book is the first complete study and monograph dedicated to singular traces. The text mathematically formalises the study of traces in a self contained theory of functional analysis. Extensive notes will treat the historical development. The final section will contain the most complete and concise treatment known of the integration half of Connes' quantum calculus.

Singular traces are traces on ideals of compact operators that vanish on the subideal of finite rank operators. Singular traces feature in A. Connes' interpretation of noncommutative residues. Particularly the Dixmier trace, which generalises the restricted Adler-Manin-Wodzicki residue of pseudo-differential operators and plays the role of the residue for a new catalogue of 'geometric' spaces, including Connes-Chamseddine standard models, Yang-Mills action for quantum differential forms, fractals, isospectral deformations, foliations and noncommutative index theory.

The theory of singular traces has been studied after Connes' application to non-commutative geometry and physics by various authors. Recent work by Nigel Kalton and the authors has advanced the theory of singular traces. Singular traces can be equated to symmetric functionals of symmetric
sequence or function spaces, residues of zeta functions and heat kernel asymptotics, and characterised by Lidksii and Fredholm formulas. The traces and formulas used in noncommutative geometry are now completely understood in this theory, with surprising new mathematical and physical consequences.

For mathematical readers the text offers fundamental functional analysis results and, due to Nigel Kalton's contribution, a now complete theory of traces on compact operators. For mathematical physicists and other users of Connes' noncommutative geometry the text offers a complete reference to Dixmier traces and access to the deeper mathematical features of traces on ideals associated to the harmonic sequence. These features, not known and not discussed in general texts on noncommutative geometry, are undoubtably physical and probe to the fascinating heart of classical limits and quantization.

Most classes of operators that are not isomorphic embeddings are characterized by some kind of a “smallness” condition. Narrow operators are those operators defined on function spaces that are “small” at {-1,0,1}-valued functions, e.g. compact operators are narrow. The original motivation to consider such operators came from theory of embeddings of Banach spaces, but since then they were also applied to the study of the Daugavet property and to other geometrical problems of functional analysis. The question of when a sum of two narrow operators is narrow, has led to deep developments of the theory of narrow operators, including an extension of the notion to vector lattices and investigations of connections to regular operators.

Narrow operators were a subject of numerous investigations during the last 30 years. This monograph provides a comprehensive presentation putting them in context of modern theory. It gives an in depth systematic exposition of concepts related to and influenced by narrow operators, starting from basic results and building up to most recent developments. The authors include a complete bibliography and many attractive open problems.

This monograph summarizes and extends a number of results on the topology of trigonal curves in geometrically ruled surfaces. An emphasis is given to various applications of the theory to a few related areas, most notably singular plane curves of small degree, elliptic surfaces, and Lefschetz fibrations (both complex and real), and Hurwitz equivalence of braid monodromy factorizations.

The approach relies on a close relation between trigonal curves/elliptic surfaces, a certain class of ribbon graphs, and subgroups of the modular group, which provides a combinatorial framework for the study of geometric objects. A brief summary of the necessary auxiliary results and techniques used and a background of the principal problems dealt with are included in the text.

The book is intended to researchers and graduate students in the field of topology of complex and real algebraic varieties.

Fractional calculus is a rapidly growing field of research, at the interface between probability, differential equations, and mathematical physics. It is used to model anomalous diffusion, in which a cloud of particles spreads in a different manner than traditional diffusion. This monograph develops the basic theory of fractional calculus and anomalous diffusion, from the point of view of probability.

In this book, we will see how fractional calculus and anomalous diffusion can be understood at a deep and intuitive level, using ideas from probability. It covers basic limit theorems for random variables and random vectors with heavy tails. This includes regular variation, triangular arrays, infinitely divisible laws, random walks, and stochastic process convergence in the Skorokhod topology. The basic ideas of fractional calculus and anomalous diffusion are closely connected with heavy tail limit theorems. Heavy tails are applied in finance, insurance, physics, geophysics, cell biology, ecology, medicine, and computer engineering.

The goal of this book is to prepare graduate students in probability for research in the area of fractional calculus, anomalous diffusion, and heavy tails. Many interesting problems in this area remain open. This book will guide the motivated reader to understand the essential background needed to read and unerstand current research papers, and to gain the insights and techniques needed to begin making their own contributions to this rapidly growing field.

Green's functions represent one of the classical and widely used issues in the area of differential equations.

This monograph is looking at applied elliptic and parabolic type partial differential equations in two variables. The elliptic type includes the Laplace, static Klein-Gordon and biharmonic equation. The parabolic type is represented by the classical heat equation and the Black-Scholes equation which has emerged as a mathematical model in financial mathematics. The book is attractive for practical needs: It contains many easily computable or computer friendly representations of Green's functions, includes all the standard Green's functions and many novel ones, and provides innovative and new approaches that might lead to Green's functions.

The book is a useful source for everyone who is studying or working in the fields of science, finance, or engineering that involve practical solution of partial differential equations.

This highly self-contained book about algebraic graph theory is written with a view to keep the lively and unconventional atmosphere of a spoken text to communicate the enthusiasm the author feels about this subject. The focus is on homomorphisms and endomorphisms, matrices and eigenvalues. It ends with a challenging chapter on the topological question of embeddability of Cayley graphs on surfaces.

Significant interest in the investigation of systems with discontinuous trajectories is explained by the development of equipment in which significant role is played by impulsive control systems and impulsive computing systems. Impulsive systems are also encountered in numerous problems of natural sciences described by mathematical models with conditions reflecting the impulsive action of external forces with pulses whose duration can be neglected.

Differential equations with set-valued right-hand side arise in the investigation of evolution processes in the case of measurement errors, inaccuracy or incompleteness of information, action of bounded perturbations, violation of unique solvability conditions, etc. Differential inclusions also allow one to describe the dynamics of controlled processes and are widely used in the theory of optimal control.

This monograph is devoted to the investigation of impulsive differential equations with set-valued and discontinuous right-hand sides. It is intended for researchers, lecturers, postgraduate students, and students of higher schools specialized in the field of the theory of differential equations, the theory of optimal control, and their applications.

Unlike numerous monographs devoted to this topic, a wide range of problems covered in this book are accompanied by their sufficiently clear interpretations and applications. An important significant feature of this monograph is the desire of the author to present mathematical problems of the quantum field theory with regard to new methods of the constructive and Euclidean field theory that appeared in the last thirty years of the 20th century and are based on the rigorous mathematical apparatus of functional analysis, the theory of operators, and the theory of generalized functions.

The monograph is useful for students, post-graduate students, and young scientists who desire to understand not only the formality of construction of the quantum field theory but also its essence and connection with the classical mechanics, relativistic classical field theory, quantum mechanics, group theory, and the theory of path integral formalism.

Markov processes represent a universal model for a large variety of real life random evolutions. The wide flow of new ideas, tools, methods and applications constantly pours into the ever-growing stream of research on Markov processes that rapidly spreads over new fields of natural and social sciences, creating new streamlined logical paths to its turbulent boundary. Even if a given process is not Markov, it can be often inserted into a larger Markov one (Markovianization procedure) by including the key historic parameters into the state space.

This monograph gives a concise, but systematic and self-contained, exposition of the essentials of Markov processes, together with recent achievements, working from the "physical picture" - a formal pre-generator, and stressing the interplay between probabilistic (stochastic differential equations) and analytic (semigroups) tools.

The book will be useful to students and researchers. Part I can be used for a one-semester course on Brownian motion, Lévy and Markov processes, or on probabilistic methods for PDE. Part II mainly contains the author's research on Markov processes.

Bernstein functions appear in various fields of mathematics, e.g. probability theory, potential theory, operator theory, functional analysis and complex analysis – often with different definitions and under different names. Among the synonyms are `Laplace exponent' instead of Bernstein function, and complete Bernstein functions are sometimes called `Pick functions', `Nevanlinna functions' or `operator monotone functions'.

This monograph – now in its second revised and extended edition – offers a self-contained and unified approach to Bernstein functions and closely related function classes, bringing together old and establishing new connections. For the second edition the authors added a substantial amount of new material. As in the first edition Chapters 1 to 11 contain general material which should be accessible to non-specialists, while the later Chapters 12 to 15 are devoted to more specialized topics. An extensive list of complete Bernstein functions with their representations is provided.

The book shows how the arithmetic and mathematical capability of the digital computer can be enhanced in a quite natural way. The work is motivated by the desire and the need to improve the accuracy of numerical computing and to control the quality of the computed results (validity). The accuracy requirements for the elementary floating-point operations are extended to the customary product spaces of computations including interval spaces. The mathematical properties of these models are extracted into an axiomatic approach which leads to a general theory of computer arithmetic. Detailed methods and circuits for the implementation of this advanced computer arithmetic on digital computers are developed in part two of the book. Part three then illustrates by a number of sample applications how this extended computer arithmetic can be used to compute highly accurate and mathematically verified results. The book can be used as a high-level undergraduate textbook but also as reference work for research in computer arithmetic and applied mathematics.

In the early 1920s M. Morse discovered that the number of critical points of a smooth function on a manifold is closely related to the topology of the manifold. This became a starting point of the Morse theory which is now one of the basic parts of differential topology.

Circle-valued Morse theory originated from a problem in hydrodynamics studied by S. P. Novikov in the early 1980s. Nowadays, it is a constantly growing field of contemporary mathematics with applications and connections to many geometrical problems such as Arnold's conjecture in the theory of Lagrangian intersections, fibrations of manifolds over the circle, dynamical zeta functions, and the theory of knots and links in the three-dimensional sphere.

The aim of the book is to give a systematic treatment of geometric foundations of the subject and recent research results. The book is accessible to first year graduate students specializing in geometry and topology.

The basics of the theory of elliptic curves should be known to everybody, be he (or she) a mathematician or a computer scientist. Especially everybody concerned with cryptography should know the elements of this theory.

The purpose of the present textbook is to give an elementary introduction to elliptic curves. Since this branch of number theory is particularly accessible to computer-assisted calculations, the authors make use of it by approaching the theory under a computational point of view. Specifically, the computer-algebra package SIMATH can be applied on several occasions. However, the book can be read also by those not interested in any computations. Of course, the theory of elliptic curves is very comprehensive and becomes correspondingly sophisticated. That is why the authors made a choice of the topics treated. Topics covered include the determination of torsion groups, computations regarding the Mordell-Weil group, height calculations, S-integral points. The contents is kept as elementary as possible. In this way it becomes obvious in which respect the book differs from the numerous textbooks on elliptic curves nowadays available.

This is a state-of-the-art introduction to the work of Franz Reidemeister, Meng Taubes, Turaev, and the author on the concept of torsion and its generalizations. Torsion is the oldest topological (but not with respect to homotopy) invariant that in its almost eight decades of existence has been at the center of many important and surprising discoveries. During the past decade, in the work of Vladimir Turaev, new points of view have emerged, which turned out to be the "right ones" as far as gauge theory is concerned.

The book features mostly the new aspects of this venerable concept. The theoretical foundations of this subject are presented in a style accessible to those, who wish to learn and understand the main ideas of the theory. Particular emphasis is upon the many and rather diverse concrete examples and techniques which capture the subleties of the theory better than any abstract general result. Many of these examples and techniques never appeared in print before, and their choice is often justified by ongoing current research on the topology of surface singularities.

The text is addressed to mathematicians with geometric interests who want to become comfortable users of this versatile invariant.

This is an introductory textbook on isometry groups of the hyperbolic plane. Interest in such groups dates back more than 120 years. Examples appear in number theory (modular groups and triangle groups), the theory of elliptic functions, and the theory of linear differential equations in the complex domain (giving rise to the alternative name Fuchsian groups).

The current book is based on what became known as the famous Fenchel-Nielsen manuscript. Jakob Nielsen (1890-1959) started this project well before World War II, and his interest arose through his deep investigations on the topology of Riemann surfaces and from the fact that the fundamental group of a surface of genus greater than one is represented by such a discontinuous group. Werner Fenchel (1905-1988) joined the project later and overtook much of the preparation of the manuscript. The present book is special because of its very complete treatment of groups containing reversions and because it avoids the use of matrices to represent Moebius maps.

This text is intended for students and researchers in the many areas of mathematics that involve the use of discontinuous groups.

This book is the first comprehensive treatment of Painlevé differential equations in the complex plane. Starting with a rigorous presentation for the meromorphic nature of their solutions, the Nevanlinna theory will be applied to offer a detailed exposition of growth aspects and value distribution of Painlevé transcendents. The subsequent main part of the book is devoted to topics of classical background such as representations and expansions of solutions, solutions of special type like rational and special transcendental solutions, Bäcklund transformations and higher order analogues, treated separately for each of these six equations. The final chapter offers a short overview of applications of Painlevé equations, including an introduction to their discrete counterparts. Due to the present important role of Painlevé equations in physical applications, this monograph should be of interest to researchers in both mathematics and physics and to graduate students interested in mathematical physics and the theory of differential equations.

This book gives a straightforward introduction to the field as it is nowadays required in many branches of analysis and especially in probability theory. The first three chapters (Measure Theory, Integration Theory, Product Measures) basically follow the clear and approved exposition given in the author's earlier book on "Probability Theory and Measure Theory". Special emphasis is laid on a complete discussion of the transformation of measures and integration with respect to the product measure, convergence theorems, parameter depending integrals, as well as the Radon-Nikodym theorem.

The final chapter, essentially new and written in a clear and concise style, deals with the theory of Radon measures on Polish or locally compact spaces. With the main results being Luzin's theorem, the Riesz representation theorem, the Portmanteau theorem, and a characterization of locally compact spaces which are Polish, this chapter is a true invitation to study topological measure theory.

The text addresses graduate students, who wish to learn the fundamentals in measure and integration theory as needed in modern analysis and probability theory. It will also be an important source for anyone teaching such a course.

The subject matter of compact groups is frequently cited in fi elds like algebra, topology, functional analysis, and theoretical physics. This book serves the dual purpose of providing a text for upper level graduate students, and of being a source book for researchers who need the structure and representation theory of compact groups. After a gentle introduction to compact groups and their representation theory, the book presents self-contained courses on linear Lie groups and on locally compact abelian groups.Appended chapters contain the material for self-contained courses on abelian groups and on category theory.Using the Lie algebras and the exponential function of arbitrary compact groups, the book avoids unnecessary restrictions to finite dimensional or abelian compact groups. Earlier editions of 1998, 2006, 2013, and 2020 have been quoted for instruction and research. The present edition conceptually sharpens, polishes, and improves the earlier material. For instance, it includes a treatment of the Bohr compactifi cation of topological groups which fi ts perfectly into the general treatment of adjoint functors that the book treats in an appendix of its own, and which, in the abelian environment, connects neatly with the Pontryagin--van Kampen duality of compact abelian groups having been discussed in the book in great detail. The link between arbitrary compact groups and their weakly complete group algebras is as extensively discussed as is now the theory of weakly complete universal enveloping algebras of the Lie algebras of compact groups. All of this is based on the category of weakly complete real and complex vector spaces and its precise duality to the category of ordinary real, respectively, complex vector spaces, is treated in an appendix systematically.

This fourth edition was updated with the latest developments in the field.

The subject matter of compact groups is frequently cited in fields like algebra, topology, functional analysis, and theoretical physics. This book serves the dual purpose of providing a textbook on it for upper level graduate courses or seminars, and of serving as a source book for research specialists who need to apply the structure and representation theory of compact groups.

After a gentle introduction to compact groups and their representation theory, the book presents self-contained courses on linear Lie groups, on compact Lie groups, and on locally compact abelian groups. Separate appended chapters contain the material for courses on abelian groups and on category theory. However, the thrust of the book points in the direction of the structure theory of not necessarily finite dimensional, nor necessarily commutative, compact groups, unfettered by weight restrictions or dimensional bounds. In the process it utilizes infinite dimensional Lie algebras and the exponential function of arbitrary compact groups.

The first edition of 1998 and the second edition of 2006 were well received by reviewers and have been frequently quoted in the areas of instruction and research. For the present new edition the text has been cleaned of typographical flaws and the content has been conceptually sharpened in some places and polished and improved in others. New material has been added to various sections taking into account the progress of research on compact groups both by the authors and other writers. Motivation was provided, among other things, by questions about the structure of compact groups put to the authors by readers through the years following the earlier editions. Accordingly, the authors wished to clarify some aspects of the book which they felt needed improvement. The list of references has increased as the authors included recent publications pertinent to the content of the book.

This book contains an introductory and comprehensive account of the theory of (symmetric) Dirichlet forms. Moreover this analytic theory is unified with the probabilistic potential theory based on symmetric Markov processes and developed further in conjunction with the stochastic analysis based on additive functional.

Since the publication of the first edition in 1994, this book has attracted constant interests from readers and is by now regarded as a standard reference for the theory of Dirichlet forms. For the present second edition, the authors not only revised the existing text, but also added sections on capacities and Sobolev type inequalities, irreducible recurrence and ergodicity, recurrence and Poincaré type inequalities, the Donsker-Varadhan type large deviation principle, as well as several new exercises with solutions.

The book addresses to researchers and graduate students who wish to comprehend the area of Dirichlet forms and symmetric Markov processes.

Due to the strong appeal and wide use of this monograph, it is now available in its second revised edition. The monograph gives a systematic treatment of 3-dimensional topological quantum field theories (TQFTs) based on the work of the author with N. Reshetikhin and O. Viro. This subject was inspired by the discovery of the Jones polynomial of knots and the Witten-Chern-Simons field theory. On the algebraic side, the study of 3-dimensional TQFTs has been influenced by the theory of braided categories and the theory of quantum groups.

The book is divided into three parts. Part I presents a construction of 3-dimensional TQFTs and 2-dimensional modular functors from so-called modular categories. This gives a vast class of knot invariants and 3-manifold invariants as well as a class of linear representations of the mapping class groups of surfaces. In Part II the technique of 6j-symbols is used to define state sum invariants of 3-manifolds. Their relation to the TQFTs constructed in Part I is established via the theory of shadows. Part III provides constructions of modular categories, based on quantum groups and skein modules of tangles in the 3-space.

This fundamental contribution to topological quantum field theory is accessible to graduate students in mathematics and physics with knowledge of basic algebra and topology. It is an indispensable source for everyone who wishes to enter the forefront of this fascinating area at the borderline of mathematics and physics.

This monograph provides a systematic treatment of topological quantum field theories (TQFT's) in three dimensions, inspired by the discovery of the Jones polynomial of knots, the Witten-Chern-Simons field theory, and the theory of quantum groups. The author, one of the leading experts in the subject, gives a rigorous and self-contained exposition of new fundamental algebraic and topological concepts that emerged in this theory.

The book is divided into three parts. Part I presents a construction of 3-dimensional TQFT's and 2-dimensional modular functors from so-called modular categories. In Part II the machinery of 6j-symbols is used to define state sum invariants of 3-manifolds. Their relation to the TQFT's constructed in Part I is established via the theory of shadows. Part III provides constructions of modular categories, based on quantum groups and Kauffman's skein modules.

This book is accessible to graduate students in mathematics and physics with a knowledge of basic algebra and topology. It will be an indispensable source for everyone who wishes to enter the forefront of this rapidly growing and fascinating area at the borderline of mathematics and physics. Most of the results and techniques presented here appear in book form for the first time.

The subject of this book is analysis on Wiener space by means of Dirichlet forms and Malliavin calculus. There are already several literature on this topic, but this book has some different viewpoints.

First the authors review the theory of Dirichlet forms, but they observe only functional analytic, potential theoretical and algebraic properties. They do not mention the relation with Markov processes or stochastic calculus as discussed in usual books (e.g. Fukushima’s book). Even on analytic properties, instead of mentioning the Beuring-Deny formula, they discuss “carré du champ” operators introduced by Meyer and Bakry very carefully. Although they discuss when this “carré du champ” operator exists in general situation, the conditions they gave are rather hard to verify, and so they verify them in the case of Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operator in Wiener space later. (It should be noticed that one can easily show the existence of “carré du champ” operator in this case by using Shigekawa’s H-derivative.)

In the part on Malliavin calculus, the authors mainly discuss the absolute continuity of the probability law of Wiener functionals. The Dirichlet form corresponds to the first derivative only, and so it is not easy to consider higher order derivatives in this framework. This is the reason why they discuss only the first step of Malliavin calculus. On the other hand, they succeeded to deal with some delicate problems (the absolute continuity of the probability law of the solution to stochastic differential equations with Lipschitz continuous coefficients, the domain of stochastic integrals (Itô-Ramer-Skorokhod integrals), etc.).

This book focuses on the abstract structure of Dirichlet forms and Malliavin calculus rather than their applications. However, the authors give a lot of exercises and references and they may help the reader to study other topics which are not discussed in this book.

This book is an introduction to classical knot theory. Topics covered include: different constructions of knots, knot diagrams, knot groups, fibred knots, characterisation of torus knots, prime decomposition of knots, cyclic coverings and Alexander polynomials and modules together with the free differential calculus, braids, branched coverings and knots, Montesinos links, representations of knot groups, surgery of 3-manifolds and knots, Jones and HOMFLYPT polynomials.

Knot theory has expanded enormously since the first edition of this book published in 1985. In this third completely revised and extended edition a chapter about bridge number and companionship of knots has been added.

The book contains many figures and some tables of invariants of knots. This comprehensive account is an indispensable reference source for anyone interested in both classical and modern knot theory.

Most of the topics considered in the book are developed in detail; only the main properties of fundamental groups, covering spaces and some basic results of combinatorial group theory are assumed to be known. The text is accessible to advanced undergraduate and graduate students in mathematics.

The mathematical modeling of many problems from economics, computer science, engineering, biological neural networks and others leads to the consideration of nonlinear difference equations. Many authors have studied such problems by using various methods, such as: the fixed point theory, the fixed point index theory, variational methods, the critical point theory, different transformations, extensions of Perron's second theorem, diversified criteria for the stability of solutions, and so on.

This monograph studies the existence of positive solutions for some classes of second-order nonlinear finite difference equations, and systems of second-order nonlinear finite difference equations, subject to various multi-point boundary conditions. In the case of systems, these boundary conditions may be uncoupled or coupled. It also investigates a class of nonlinear 𝜈th order Atıcı-Eloe fractional difference equations supplemented with varied boundary conditions, and some systems of generalized second-order difference equations in Hilbert spaces with multi-point boundary conditions. The book draws together our results that have been obtained in the last years. Chapter 1 deals with the existence of positive solutions for two second-order finite difference equations which contain a linear term and a sign-changing nonlinearity, with or without parameters, subject to multi-point boundary conditions. Chapter 2 is focused on the existence and multiplicity of positive solutions for two systems of nonlinear second-order difference equations with uncoupled multi-point boundary conditions. The nonlinearities from the systems are nonnegative functions and satisfy some assumptions containing concave functions, or they are sign-changing functions. Chapter 3 studies the existence and nonexistence of positive solutions for two systems of nonlinear second-order difference equations supplemented with coupled multi-point boundary conditions, with positive parameters in the systems or in the boundary conditions. The nonlinearities of the systems are nonnegative functions and satisfy various assumptions. Chapter 4 is concerned with the existence and multiplicity of positive solutions for two systems of nonlinear second-order difference equations subject to coupled multi-point boundary conditions, without parameters. The nonlinearities of the systems are nonnegative functions and satisfy various assumptions. Chapter 5 is devoted to the existence of positive solutions for a system of nonlinear second-order difference equations with parameters and sign-changing nonlinearities, supplemented with multi-point coupled boundary conditions. Chapter 6 deals with the existence of nontrivial solutions, nonnegative solutions and positive solutions for a class of nonlinear 𝜈th order Atıcı-Eloe fractional difference equations with left focal boundary conditions or Dirichlet boundary conditions. In each chapter, various examples are presented which support the main results.

Finally, the new Chapter 7 investigates the existence and uniqueness of solutions for some nonlinear systems of generalized second-order difference equations in Hilbert spaces, subject to multi-point boundary conditions containing monotone operators. Some applications to initial-boundary value problems for nonlinear first-order differential systems with monotone operators are also addressed. The methods used in the proof of our theorems include results from the fixed point theory, the fixed point index theory, the theory of monotone operators and nonlinear evolution equations of monotone type in Hilbert spaces.

This monograph can serve as a good resource for the mathematical and scientific researchers, and for the graduate students in mathematics and science interested in the existence of solutions and positive solutions for finite difference equations and systems.
