Botanica Marina publishes high-quality contributions from all of the disciplines of marine botany at all levels of biological organisation from subcellular to ecosystem: chemistry and applications, genomics, physiology and ecology, phylogeny and biogeography. Research involving global or interdisciplinary interest is especially welcome. Applied science papers are appreciated, particularly when they illustrate the application of emerging conceptual issues or promote developing technologies. The journal invites state-of-the art reviews dealing with recent developments in marine botany.

Species of Dictyota with dentate margins exhibit notable diversity and a broad distribution across the Greater Caribbean. Oceanic islands such as Saint Kitts (Lesser Antilles) and the Archipelago of San Andrés (Colombia) play a key role in expanding our understanding of these taxa. In this study, we report Dictyota canariensis as a new record for both countries and confirm the presence of Dictyota ciliolata and Dictyota jamaicensis using molecular and morphological evidence. Phylogenetic analyses based on psb A and cox 1 sequences support the identity of these species, and the cox 1 haplotype network reveals some geographic structure. Overall, our findings underscore the value of molecular data in addressing taxonomic complexity and highlight the importance of oceanic islands in shaping the regional diversity of dentate Dictyota species in the Caribbean basin.

Exploring seasonal dynamics and biochemical composition of the red alga Chondracanthus acicularis on the Moroccan Atlantic coast: a comprehensive study

The red alga Chondracanthus acicularis , a carrageenophyte species, represents a valuable but underexplored marine resource with significant biochemical potential. This study examined the seasonal variability of its primary and secondary metabolites at two Moroccan coastal sites: El Jadida and Sidi Rahal. Key metabolites, including pigments, polysaccharides, proteins, lipids, polyphenols, and flavonoids, were analyzed. Polysaccharides were the dominant macronutrient, showing pronounced seasonal fluctuations, particularly at El Jadida. Protein content was consistently higher at El Jadida than at Sidi Rahal, with limited seasonal variation; however, lipid content remained low throughout the study. Pigments exhibited significant seasonal changes, with chlorophyll a peaking in winter, and allophycocyanin reaching maximum concentrations in summer at El Jadida and in winter at Sidi Rahal. Ethanol extractions were more efficient than aqueous methods for recovering polyphenol and flavonoid. Overall, these findings highlight the biochemical diversity of C. acicularis and its potential industrial value, supporting its development as a promising resource for biotechnological applications.

Intraspecific variation in growth rates of Rhodomonas marina (Cryptophyceae) under different temperatures and salinities conditions: a comparative study of six Arctic and one temperate strain

Marine and freshwater cryptophytes are highly valued for their nutritional content and are commonly used as live feed for copepods in aquaculture. Few studies have examined the impact of temperature and salinity on growth rates of several cryptophyte strains isolated from the same water sample. This study presents the first multi-strain autecological analysis of an Arctic marine cryptophyte species, using six strains of Rhodomonas marina and one temperate strain to explore intraspecific variation. Phylogenetic inference based on ITS revealed a close relationship among all R. marina strains (99.6–100 % sequence similarity). The autecological study used batch cultures, examining growth rates at three salinities and five temperatures in one-parameter experiments. One Arctic strain and the temperate strain were also examined at 20.1 and 23.2 °C. All strains grew over a wide range of temperatures and salinities, classifying them as eurythermal and euryhaline. However, the temperate strain exhibited higher phenotypic plasticity concerning temperature, while the Arctic strains showed greater plasticity regarding salinity. Thus, this study identified the presence of intraspecific variation within a confined Arctic marine water mass, highlighting an economic potential when selecting the fastest-growing isolates for biomass production and commercial applications.

The first record of the epiphytic dinoflagellate Coolia malayensis from Russian Pacific waters

The potentially toxic dinoflagellate genera Gambierdiscus , Ostreopsis , Coolia , previously considered inhabitants of the tropical and subtropical zones, have expanded their ranges to temperate latitudes in recent decades, presumably due to ongoing global warming. Coolia species are widely distributed in the Indo-Pacific. Until recently, the northernmost known point of the Coolia distribution range in the Pacific region has been the eastern coast of the Korean Peninsula. In this paper, we report, for the first time, the presence of the genus Coolia in Pacific waters of Russia. This is also the first finding of Coolia in waters with below-zero winter temperatures. The morphology of the Russian strain of Coolia malayensis isolated from Peter the Great Bay, Sea of Japan, matches the original description of the Malaysian strain and is similar to the morphology of other strains from the Pacific region A phylogenetic analysis has clustered the Russian strain with the clade of C. malayensis , showing a 100 % similarity with the strains isolated from South Korea, New Zealand, and Malaysia and with the strains from the Canary Islands. Further observations are needed to clarify if C. malayensis is acclimated, or not, in this part of the Sea of Japan.

Rediscovery of the rare Cladochroa chnoosporiformis Skottsberg from the Falkland Islands and its merger with Utriculidium durvillei Skottsberg

The Subantarctic brown alga Cladochroa chnoosporiformis had been collected only on one occasion by Carl Skottsberg in 1907 from Port Philomel, West Falkland, Falkland Islands, resulting in its formal taxonomic description. Due to the lack of reports since then, doubts remained about its existence and identity. Within the framework of this study, Cladochroa was rediscovered 106 years after its original description at its type locality, confirming its existence and the morphological features described by Skottsberg. The re-collection enabled molecular studies on field material and isolated cultures. Sequences of nrDNA, rbc L, and 5′-COI suggest that C. chnoosporiformis is conspecific with Utriculidium durvillei , which has nomenclatural priority. However, the morphologies of C. chnoosporiformis and U. durvillei are significantly different. Utriculidium may be the gametophyte generation of Cladochroa , or hitherto unknown factors cause highly different morphologies without alternating generations.

The minute marine multicellular heterokont alga originally described as “ Giraudyopsis stellifer ” by P.J.L. Dangeard, nom. inval. , from Atlantic France, was re-isolated by the germling emergence technique and classified according to psa A and psb C sequences. It is genetically similar (99–100 % identity) to Phaeosaccion multiseriatum R.A. Andersen, L. Graf et H.S. Yoon recently described from the NE Pacific, an ephemeral alga of wide geographical distribution. We isolated it also from substratum samples collected in Korea and the Falkland Islands, where it had not been reported previously. Two isolates of similar morphology from the coast of Chile had the same nuclear ribosomal SSU sequence but differed from P. multiseriatum and P. okellyi R.A. Andersen, L. Graf et H.S. Yoon from New Zealand in psa A and psb C sequences (3–4 % genetic distance). These two isolates are here described as Phaeosaccion westermeieri sp. nov.. Our isolations of P . multiseriatum and P. westermeieri are a further demonstration that the germling emergence technique can reveal microscopic multicellular benthic algae that are easily overlooked in the field.

Zoosporic fungi of Taiwan, with particular reference to species from marine and brackish environments

Zoosporic fungi are little known in Taiwan, compared to Ascomycota and Basidiomycota. This paper is a summary of the diversity of zoosporic fungi in Taiwan, based on an exhaustive literature search and our recent interest in the group. A total of 106 species is documented. These fungi belong to six phyla (Blastocladiomycota, Chytridiomycota, Monoblepharomycota, Neocallimastigomycota, Olpidiomycota, Rozellomycota), 11 classes, 11 orders, 31 families, and 52 genera. The Chytridiomycota constitutes the largest phylum of zoosporic fungi in Taiwan, and the Rhizophydiomycetes is the largest fungal class. Seventeen of the 106 species of zoosporic fungi inhabit marine/salty environments, as they were previously reported from these environments or cultured and/or discovered from low salinity environments in this study. This paper reports three new records ( Gorgonomyces limnicus , Spizellomyces kniepii and Triparticalcar equi ) for Taiwan, both cultured from water samples collected from coastal habitats of Taiwan. Zoosporic fungi in Taiwan are diverse, and require further study. The inventory of species reported in this paper provides a foundation for future diversity and ecological studies of this group on the island.

Cool under heat: humidity moderates the tolerance of Fucus vesiculosus (Phaeophyceae) to changes in air temperature during emersion

Projections for climate change potentially mean that tidally exposed seaweeds will experience greater air temperature extremes than those that remain immersed. This study investigated the combined effects of temperature and humidity on the relative growth rate of Fucus vesiculosus through two controlled experiments: (1) evaluating responses to various temperature and humidity regimes, and (2) assessing the impact of three consecutive days of heatwave conditions (25 °C). Samples from the upper and lower shore were subjected to 24, 30 and 40 °C at relative humidities of 30–90 % for 4 or 8 h, using an incubator oven to generate six vapour pressure deficit (VPD) levels (0.3–5.3 kPa). A VPD of 5.3 kPa proved detrimental to the seaweeds regardless of duration. In contrast, F. vesiculosus tolerated a VPD of 2.4 kPa for up to 8 h. Little difference was detected between upper and lower shore residing specimens. Heatwave conditions did not negatively affect F. vesiculosus growth irrespective of shore location. Blades could recover from proportional water biomass loss of up to 0.6 but not from a loss of 0.7 regardless of VPD. Nonetheless, greater VPD values tended to coincide with increased water biomass loss and decreased post-exposure growth. These findings suggest that increased humidity may mitigate thermal stress, enhancing resilience under projected climate scenarios.

Gracilaria liaoi sp. nov. (Gracilariales, Rhodophyta) from the Philippines

Previous molecular studies have split species of foliose Gracilaria that were presumed to be widespread into species complexes. The recurrent discrepancies in taxonomy of Gracilaria vieillardii , a species widely reported in the Indo-Pacific and Australasian waters, prompted the use of morpho-histological and molecular approaches to resolve these outstanding issues. Material from the Philippines, initially presumed to be conspecific with G. vieillardii , was earlier shown to be genetically distinct, warranting species distinction. This material also enabled us to describe similar Philippine materials whose species criteria, satisfying morpho-anatomical and molecular support, merit recognition of a newly described species, Gracilaria liaoi . Our phylogenetic analyses revealed that G. liaoi formed a strongly supported clade distinct from authentic G. vieillardii from New Caledonia and other Gracilaria species. Characteristic features of G. liaoi include a broader blade, the presence of marginal spines in the basal regions, and numerous nutritive filaments encompassing the cystocarp cavities. There is still plenty of scope for fieldwork to establish the possible extent of the distribution of G. liaoi , and explore other aspects of the biology of this species. The present status of specimens referable to ‘ G. vieillardii ’ in the Philippines and elsewhere should be re-examined.

New records and species of Verosphacela (Onslowiales, Phaeophyceae): Verosphacela ebrachia from Greece, Verosphacela henryi sp. nov. from Rapa Nui and Verosphacela asensii sp. nov. from Ascension Island

Onslowiales are minute sublittoral marine brown algae found in warm-temperate to tropical regions of the North Atlantic Ocean. Sequences of the plastid-encoded markers psa A, psb C, rbc L and the Rubisco spacer of a strain of Verosphacela from Greece, previously identified as Verosphacela silvae , were highly similar to sequences of Verosphacela ebrachia from Florida, extending the distribution of the species to the Mediterranean and suggesting re-examination of the morphologically similar V. silvae described from Italy. Two other species were grown from substratum collected in the subtidal of Rapa Nui (Easter Island, subtropical Southeast Pacific) and Ascension Island (tropical Atlantic). According to sequences of the aforementioned markers, they also belong to the Onslowiales, forming a clade with V. ebrachia . They are described here as Verosphacela henryi sp. nov. and Verosphacela asensii sp. nov., respectively. In culture, they consisted of creeping branched filaments growing by means of an apical cell, and subterminal filament cells dividing once longitudinally. V. henryi formed four- to five-celled propagules without apical cells, resembling those of V. ebrachia , whereas V. asensii remained vegetative. V. asensii extends the distribution of the Onslowiales to the central tropical Atlantic, and V. henryi is the first record of the order in the Pacific Ocean.
